Happy Birthday Kylie Minogue!

Kylie has always been one of my biggest icon growing up.

I was introduced to her and her music since 1988 when I first heard I Should Be So Lucky on the radio. Of course I didn't know she was then, and didn't know how I could find a way to listen to that song again as I was so little and my parents knew absolutely nothing about pop culture in the 80s.

I didn't get to know who Kylie was until I was re-introduced to her again by my cousin Anthony who was a couple years older than I was and had already started getting into pop music. My first music purchase wasn't Kylie though. I remember getting my father to purchase Madonna's Like A Prayer and Pepsi & Shirlie's All Right Now on cassette! But I have a pretty strong feeling Kylie's cassingle (cassette single) for Hand On Your Heart was my 3rd music purchase at the time, which lead to owning the Enjoy Yourself album. And the list when on from there.

Kylie has always been a source of fashion inspiration for me even during my teen years. Growing up, I wanted to have Kylie's black brows from the What Do I Have To Do video, which sort of lead to the slimmer brows she had for her DeCon years when she first released her Kylie Minogue (1994) album. I think I was perhaps the only one in school who was into Ms Minogue's music and persona at the time. Growing up, I have always marched to a different beat all my own, so it didn't bother me that whatever I liked doing or whatever music I was into at the time were not what my friends at school were interested in. Even during my college years, I wanted Kylie's glossy lips from her Impossible Princess days (LOL). I even had a short stint wearing REALLY short denim shorts prancing all over town when her Spinning Around gold hotpants were the subject of discussion all over the world! When she got her hair cut into a Bardot-like fringed look, I did the same. And then of course, being an asian with really black hair, I decided to go blond. Like REALLY blond. All because of Kylie.

In 2010, I had the opportunity of a lifetime to see Kylie promoting her Aphrodite album on tour in Singapore. That was perhaps THE highlight of my life so far. My friends and I screamed the whole night until we lost our voices. And it was money well spent. Just knowing that being in the same 'room' as your icon just took my breath away.

So basically throughout the vast majority of my entire life up till now, Kylie's music has always been part of me since 1988. Ever single track I listen to, whether from her albums, B-sides, remixes, live tracks, or unreleased materials have a significant meaning that also comes with pleasant memories. I guess I can say that Kylie has helped shaped my life in so many ways. Without her, my world would be a very black & white existence.

And to celebrate her birthday in my own way, I am listening to ALL Kylie's albums :-
